Hello, seeker of beautiful and resilient foliage! I am the Aglaonema, or Chinese Evergreen, a superstar of the houseplant world celebrated for my stunning, variegated leaves and incredible adaptability. I come in a dazzling array of colors and patterns, from deep green splashed with silver to vibrant shades of pink and red. I am one of the most tolerant and low-maintenance plants you can find, making me the perfect choice for beginners and busy plant parents alike. I'm here to bring lush, tropical beauty to your space with minimal fuss.
I am a herbaceous perennial that grows in a compact, clumping form.
My most captivating feature is my large, lance-shaped or oval leaves that display beautiful patterns of silver, white, cream, pink, or red against a green background.
I am a slow-growing plant, known for being a reliable and long-lasting companion that thrives on neglect.
I am native to the tropical and subtropical rainforests of Asia and New Guinea.
I am quite forgiving and prefer to dry out between waterings.
Water me thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. I am very susceptible to root rot, so it's always better to underwater me than overwater me.
In lower light and cooler temperatures, I will need water less frequently. Always ensure my pot has drainage holes.
I am famous for my ability to tolerate low light conditions.
However, I will truly thrive and show the most vibrant variegation in medium to bright, indirect light. The more variegation I have (especially pink or red), the more light I need to maintain it.
Direct sun will scorch my delicate leaves.
I enjoy warm, stable room temperatures. My ideal range is between 18°C and 26°C.
I am very sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C. Keep me away from air conditioners and cold windows in winter.
Potting Mix: I need a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. A standard indoor potting mix works well.
Pot: Any pot with drainage holes will do. I am a slow grower and don't mind being slightly root-bound.
Repotting: Repot me in spring only when I become very root-bound, which may be every 2-3 years.
Cleaning: Gently wipe my large leaves with a damp cloth every so often to keep them glossy and free from dust.
I am a very light feeder.
Feed me with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength.
Apply it once in the spring and once in the summer. I do not need fertilizer in the autumn and winter.
Scientific Name: Aglaonema spp.
Common Names: Chinese Evergreen, Philippine Evergreen
Plant Family: Araceae
Plant Type: Tropical Evergreen Perennial
I am toxic to cats and dogs.
Like many plants in the Araceae family, I contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. If chewed or ingested, I can cause oral irritation, pain, drooling, and vomiting. Please keep me out of reach of your pets.
I am a renowned air purifier! According to the NASA Clean Air Study, I am highly effective at removing common household toxins like benzene and formaldehyde from the air.
