All Details

Hello, colorful trailblazer! I am the Wandering Jew, your vibrant and fast-growing trailing plant known for my striking purple-green striped leaves and quick-spreading nature. I'm a resilient and eye-catching plant that cascades beautifully from hanging baskets or spreads as ground cover, bringing a splash of bold color and lively energy to any space. I'm here to wander and win hearts with my dazzling foliage!

I'm a tender perennial with succulent stems and oval-shaped leaves that feature metallic purple-green stripes with silvery sheens and purple undersides.
My most captivating feature is my colorful foliage that seems to shimmer in the light, creating a stunning visual effect.
I'm a vigorous grower and can quickly fill a pot or garden bed with my trailing stems.
I produce small, three-petaled pink or white flowers that add to my charm, though I'm primarily grown for my beautiful leaves.

I am native to Mexico, but I have become naturalized in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

I prefer consistently moist but well-drained soil.
Water me when the top inch of soil feels dry—usually once or twice a week.
I'm somewhat drought-tolerant but will thrive with regular moisture.
Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.

I thrive in bright, indirect light.
Medium to bright light enhances my leaf coloration and keeps my patterns vibrant.
I can tolerate some direct morning sun but may scorch in intense afternoon light.
Too little light may cause my colors to fade.

I enjoy average room temperatures between 18°C and 27°C.
I'm sensitive to cold—protect me from temperatures below 10°C.
I prefer moderate to high humidity but adapt well to average home conditions.

Use a well-draining potting mix with good organic matter.

Choose a hanging basket or wide pot to accommodate my spreading habit.

Plant cuttings or rooted sections about 4-6 inches apart.

Water thoroughly after planting and keep soil consistently moist.

Pinch back stem tips regularly to encourage bushier growth.

I root easily from stem cuttings in water or soil.

Feed me with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
A fertilizer with micronutrients can help maintain my vibrant colors.
Reduce or stop fertilizing in winter.

Scientific Name: Tradescantia zebrina

Common Names: Inch Plant, Silver Inch Plant, Zebrina Pendula

Plant Family: Commelinaceae

Plant Type: Indoor/Outdoor trailing plant

I am generally considered mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, potentially causing skin irritation or digestive upset. It's best to keep me out of reach of pets.

While I'm mainly grown for my ornamental beauty, I do help improve indoor air quality by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen.
