All Details

A striking and fast-growing succulent vine or shrub, famous for its round, silvery-blue, coin-like leaves that look almost metallic. It is prized for its unique foliage color and texture, adding a cool, sculptural element to gardens and containers, especially in arid and coastal landscapes.

I am a sprawling perennial plant that can grow as a vine, shrub, or ground cover, depending on support and pruning.

My most distinctive feature is my round, flat, disc-like leaves that are a beautiful powdery silvery-blue or blue-green color. They are attached to the stem by a central petiole, giving them a charming, pendant-like appearance.

My stems are reddish-brown and become woody with age. I can climb or trail several meters if given support.

I produce small, fragrant, creamy-white to pale yellow flowers, but my foliage is the main attraction.

I am native to the arid, rocky slopes of South Africa.

I am a drought-tolerant succulent. My water needs are very low.

Use the "soak and dry" method thoroughly. Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry.

In winter, water extremely sparingly—once a month or less—especially if grown outdoors in a rainy climate.

I am highly susceptible to root rot from overwatering. Perfect drainage and infrequent watering are key to my survival.

I thrive in low humidity and dry air.

I am a full sun lover. I require at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain my compact growth and intense silvery color.

In too little light, my stems will become long, weak, and leggy as they stretch for the sun, and the beautiful silvery coating (farina) on my leaves will be less pronounced.

I can tolerate very light shade, but my most stunning form is achieved in blazing sun.

I thrive in warm, dry climates and am best suited to USDA zones 9-11 if grown outdoors year-round.

My ideal range is 18°C to 27°C.

I am not frost-hardy. Protect me from temperatures below 2°C. I can tolerate coastal conditions, salt spray, and intense heat.

I am excellent for rock gardens, succulent beds, slopes for erosion control, and as a dramatic spiller in large containers or hanging baskets.

Plant me in extremely well-draining, gritty, sandy soil. A cactus/succulent mix amended with extra pumice or perlite is ideal.

If training me as a climber, provide a trellis, fence, or wall. I can also cascade beautifully over walls or pots.

Space me adequately, as I can spread widely.

I am a very light feeder. Fertilizing is often unnecessary if planted in decent soil.

If desired, apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to 1/4 strength, or a cactus/succulent fertilizer, once in early spring.

Over-fertilizing will cause excessive, weak growth and can dilute my silvery color.

Scientific Name: Xerosicyos danguyi (Primary species referred to as Silver Dollar Plant)

Common Names: Silver Dollar Vine, Penny Plant, String of Coins

Plant Family: Cucurbitaceae (The Gourd Family)

Plant Type: Perennial succulent vine/shrub

I am generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making me a pet-friendly choice for succulent gardens.

Like most succulents, my air purification capacity is minimal. I am grown primarily for my exceptional ornamental and textural qualities in the landscape.
