All Details
A dazzling foliage plant celebrated for its iridescent, metallic leaves in shades of vibrant purple, violet, and silver. The foliage shimmers with an almost painted quality, creating a stunning display of color that intensifies in bright light. It's a tender perennial often grown as an annual or houseplant for its unparalleled leaf color.
I am a tropical, evergreen sub-shrub or herbaceous perennial, grown almost exclusively for my spectacular foliage.
My most iconic feature is my large, lance-shaped leaves with a metallic, iridescent sheen of purple, violet, and silver, overlaying a deep green background. The undersides of the leaves are a rich, solid purple.
I have an upright to slightly sprawling habit, with leaves arranged opposite each other on square stems.
I produce small, tubular, blue-violet flowers in short spikes, but they are often insignificant compared to the foliage and are sometimes pinched off to direct energy to the leaves.
I am native to the tropical forests of Myanmar (Burma).
I prefer consistently moist, well-drained soil. I wilt dramatically if allowed to dry out completely, though I usually recover quickly after watering.
Water me when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid both prolonged drought and soggy, waterlogged conditions.
I appreciate high humidity (above 50%) to keep my large leaves looking their best and to prevent leaf edges from crisping. Misting or a pebble tray can help.
Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
My color is directly tied to light! I need bright, indirect light to maintain my most intense, shimmering iridescence.
Some direct morning sun is beneficial, but harsh afternoon sun can scorch my beautiful leaves.
In too much shade, my stems will become leggy as I stretch for light, and my leaves will fade to a dull, mostly greenish-silver with little purple vibrancy.
An east-facing window is often ideal.
I am a true tropical plant and thrive in warmth.
My ideal temperature range is 18°C to 27°C.
I am very sensitive to cold and frost. Temperatures below 10°C can cause damage or death. I am typically grown as an annual in cooler climates or as a houseplant (USDA zones 10-11 if outdoors year-round).
I am a stunning focal point in mixed containers, shaded annual beds, and tropical-themed gardens. I also make a striking houseplant.
Use a rich, well-draining potting mix.
Pinch back the growing tips regularly to encourage a bushier, more compact form and prevent a leggy appearance.
In the garden, I combine beautifully with plants that have bright green, gold, or lime-colored foliage.
I am a moderate feeder. Feed me every 2-4 weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer.
Reduce feeding in fall and winter if growth slows.
Over-fertilizing, especially with high-nitrogen formulas, can encourage excessive green growth at the expense of the vibrant purple color.
Scientific Name: Strobilanthes dyerianus
Common Names: Persian Shield, Royal Purple Plant
Plant Family: Acanthaceae
Plant Type: Tender evergreen perennial, often grown as an annual
I am non-toxic to cats and dogs, making me a safe and colorful choice for pet-friendly gardens and homes.
With my broad, abundant leaves, I contribute to cleaner air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. My effectiveness at removing specific toxins is not well-documented, but my foliage aids in general air quality improvement.
