Pancake Plant - Video Guide

All Details

A charming and unique succulent, famous for its nearly perfectly round, flat leaves that stack on top of each other like a pile of miniature pancakes or coins. It is a low-growing, creeping plant prized for its whimsical form and ease of care, making it a delightful addition to succulent collections and terrariums.

I am a low-growing, branching succulent with a trailing or spreading habit.

My most distinctive feature is my small, circular, flat, disc-like leaves that are attached to the stem at their center (peltate). They are a soft, jade green color, sometimes with a subtle red edge when stressed by sun.

My stems are thin and wiry, and I root at the nodes as I spread, forming a dense mat over time.

I produce tiny, star-shaped, creamy-white flowers on short stalks, but they are often insignificant compared to the adorable foliage.

I am native to the southwestern region of the Arabian Peninsula (Yemen and Saudi Arabia).

I am a drought-tolerant succulent. Use the "soak and dry" method thoroughly.

Water me deeply only when the soil is completely dry. Then, allow it to dry out fully again.

In winter, water extremely sparingly—once a month or less—to prevent rot during dormancy.

I am highly susceptible to root rot from overwatering. Excellent drainage is absolutely critical. My flat leaves can also rot if water sits on them.

I prefer low humidity.

I thrive in bright, indirect light to partial direct sun. I need plenty of light to maintain my compact, tight growth and prevent legginess.

Some direct morning or late afternoon sun is beneficial and can encourage a slight red tinge on the leaf edges.

Too much intense, hot midday sun can scorch my leaves, causing brown or bleached patches.

In too little light, my stems will stretch, and the spaces between my "pancakes" will widen, ruining my neat stacked appearance.

I prefer warm, arid conditions and am best suited to USDA zones 10-11 if grown outdoors.

My ideal range is 18°C to 27°C.

I am not frost-tolerant. Protect me from temperatures below 5°C. I enjoy a cooler, dry rest period in winter.

I am perfect for shallow dish gardens, fairy gardens, rock gardens, and as a charming spiller in mixed succulent containers or hanging baskets.

Plant me in an extremely well-draining, gritty cactus or succulent mix. Amend soil heavily with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand.

Use a shallow, wide pot with drainage holes, as my root system is shallow and I like to spread horizontally.

I propagate incredibly easily from stem cuttings or even single leaves. Let cuttings callous for a day before planting in dry soil.

I am a very light feeder. Fertilize only during the active growing season (spring and summer).

Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to 1/4 strength, or a fertilizer for cacti/succulents, once at the beginning of the season.

Do not fertilize in fall and winter. Over-fertilizing causes weak, unnatural growth.

Scientific Name: Pilea peperomioides is often called "Pancake Plant," but the true succulent "Pancake Plant" is Pilea nummulariifolia or, more commonly in collections, Crassula rupestris subsp. marnieriana (Jade Necklace) or Xerosicyos danguyi (Silver Dollar Vine). For this classic "stacked coin" look, the most accurate is Crassula 'Buddha's Temple' or Crassula perforata. Clarification: The most fitting for the "Pancake" stack is Peperomia prostrata (String of Turtles) or Crassula capitella 'Campfire'. For this guide, we'll assume the common name refers to the stacked, round leaf succulent, which is often a Crassula species like C. perforata (String of Buttons).

Common Names: String of Buttons, Stacked Crassula, Necklace Vine

Plant Family: Crassulaceae

Plant Type: Perennial trailing succulent

Most succulents in the Crassulaceae family, including the common "stacked" types, are non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Like most small succulents, my contribution to air purification is minimal. I am grown for my ornamental and novel form.
