All Details

A stunning and luxurious foliage plant renowned for its extraordinarily soft, velvety leaves with striking, contrasting veins. This compact Alocasia cultivar offers the dramatic presence of its larger relatives in a more manageable size, making it a coveted centerpiece for indoor plant collections.

I am a compact, clump-forming hybrid Alocasia, prized for my breathtaking textural leaves. My most iconic feature is my large, heart-shaped leaves with a lush, plush velvet texture and a deep, rich green color. My prominent white or silvery veins create a beautiful, etched contrast against the dark background. My leaves are held upright on sturdy, often dark-colored petioles (stems), emerging elegantly from a central rhizome.I maintain a relatively tidy, upright form compared to other sprawling Alocasias.

I am a cultivated hybrid, with parentage tracing back to tropical Southeast Asia and the Philippines.

I prefer consistently moist soil but am extremely susceptible to root rot. Water me when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry.Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, but never let me sit in a saucer of water. Empty the catch tray promptly.I crave very high humidity (60% or more). Low humidity will cause crispy brown edges on my precious velvet leaves. A humidifier is the best solution.Use lukewarm, filtered, or distilled water to prevent mineral spots on my foliage.

I thrive in bright, indirect light. Think dappled sunlight, like the floor of a tropical forest.I can tolerate medium indirect light, but my growth will slow. Too little light will cause leggy growth and loss of vibrant color.Direct sunlight will scorch and fade my delicate velvet leaves. A north or east-facing window is ideal.

I am a true tropical. Maintain warm, steady temperatures between 18°C and 27°C.I am extremely sensitive to cold. Temperatures below 15°C can cause stress, leaf drop, and dormancy. Keep me away from drafts, AC vents, and cold windows.I am grown almost exclusively as a houseplant (USDA zones 10-12 if outdoors in a very sheltered spot).

I am a spectacular specimen plant for a bright terrarium, humidity cabinet, or any room where high humidity can be maintained.Use a very airy, chunky, and well-draining aroid mix (e.g., peat/perlite/orchid bark blend). Good drainage is non-negotiable.A relatively small pot is best, as I prefer to be slightly root-bound. Repot only when necessary, in spring or summer.Dust my leaves gently with a soft, dry brush to keep the velvet pristine.

I am a moderate feeder during active growth (spring and summer). Fertilize monthly with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer (half strength is safest).Use a fertilizer with some calcium and magnesium to support my large leaves.Do not fertilize at all in autumn and winter when growth has slowed or stopped.

Scientific Name: Alocasia 'Green Velvet' (Likely a hybrid, often associated with Alocasia micholitziana or Alocasia reginula types)Common Names: Green Velvet Taro, Jewel AlocasiaPlant Family: AraceaePlant Type: Tropical evergreen perennial

Like all Alocasia, I contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals in all parts. If chewed or ingested by pets or humans, I cause intense oral pain, burning, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep me completely out of reach.

My large, velvety leaves have a good surface area for gas exchange, making me moderately effective at absorbing VOCs and releasing oxygen, while also contributing to ambient humidity.
