Hello, indoor gardener! I am the Rubber Plant, your bold and beautiful houseplant known for my large, glossy leaves and strong, architectural presence. With my deep green or burgundy foliage and upright growth habit, I bring a touch of tropical elegance and modern style to any indoor space. I'm here to purify your air, elevate your decor, and grow alongside you with minimal fuss!
I'm an evergreen tree in nature, but indoors I maintain a manageable size as a striking potted plant. My leaves are my standout feature—large, oval-shaped, and leathery with a high-gloss finish in shades of deep green or burgundy.I grow tall and upright, developing a tree-like form that makes me perfect for filling vertical space.I'm a member of the ficus family and produce a milky sap when cut or damaged.
I am native to the rainforests of India and Southeast Asia, particularly the regions of Northeast India and Indonesia.
I prefer to dry out slightly between waterings.Water me when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry—usually every 1-2 weeks.I'm sensitive to overwatering, which can cause leaf drop and root rot.Reduce watering in winter when my growth slows down.
I thrive in bright, indirect light but can adapt to medium light conditions.A few hours of direct morning sun is beneficial, but protect me from harsh afternoon rays.I can tolerate lower light but may grow slower and drop lower leaves.
I enjoy average room temperatures between 18°C and 27°C.I'm sensitive to cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.Keep me away from air conditioning vents and heating sources.
Use a well-draining potting mix with good organic matter.Choose a sturdy pot with drainage holes that can support my height.Plant me at the same depth as I was in my nursery container.Water thoroughly after repotting and place me in a shaded spot for a week.Wipe my leaves regularly with a damp cloth to keep them dust-free and shiny.Repot every 2-3 years or when I become root-bound.
Feed me with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during spring and summer.A slow-release fertilizer applied in spring can also work well.No fertilizer needed in fall and winter.
Scientific Name: Ficus elasticaCommon Names: Rubber Fig, Indian Rubber BushPlant Family: MoraceaePlant Type: Indoor foliage plant
I am toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. My sap can also cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals—handle with care when pruning.
I'm an excellent air purifier! NASA studies have shown I effectively remove formaldehyde and other common indoor pollutants from the air.
